"Karimunjawa islands off Java" Karimunjawa by theo1006

The Karimunjawa island group consists of 27 islands in the Java Sea 90 km north of Jepara. Only 5 of them are inhabited and the whole group has been declared a National Marine Park. They are the best destination from Java for snorkeling and scuba diving or just relaxing on the sandy beaches.

We had wanted to go there in 2008, but found out in time that the ferry "Muria" was out of service for repairs. So in May 2009 we spent five days there and were not disappointed. The number of foreign visitors is still very limited and domestic tourists arrive only on holidays, so it is easy to imagine that the islands are there just for you.

KGRE Travels to Karimunjawa and Jombang

In the first week of October I had the opportunity to travel to Karimunjawa Island in Central Java and to Jombang in East Java. Capt KGRE was also travelling at the same time but to different locations. Actually I was only scheduled to go to Jombang while Capt. KGRE planned to visit schools in Karimunjawa. But then just one day before the trip there was unexpected developments with our travel plans. We wanted to cover more activities during those trips. This made us re-route our travel at the last minute. So as you could imagine these travels were started rather chaotically. I had to make many phone calls to our contact people in various locations informing the changes and re-scheduling activities and times, changing tickets, getting new tickets, finding accommodation, etc. Luckily everything was okay by 4pm on 7 October 2004.

At about 1pm the next day I was ready at the airport waiting for my Merpati flight to Surabaya and then continued to Semarang. The flight was scheduled at 2.30pm but was delayed for half an hour and I used the time to work on my preparation notes. Although this was not my first travel for KGRE, I felt nervous about my activity in Karimunjawa. KGRE was invited by Pak Hisyam in Karimunjawa to participate in the proposed workshop for tourists guides for the local people of Karimunjawa Island. We were happy to offer them with a small English lesson although this is not the area that KGRE develops. Certainly this was something new for KGRE to offer such help and for me especially. I've never done any teaching practice except when I was in my final university years where I had to do some teaching practice. So I armed myself with enough material to use. I also asked Capt KGRE to help me with some ideas.

The name of Karimunjawa is taken from Javanese language 'Kremun kremun saking tanah Jawi' addressed by one of the Wali Songo [the Nine Saints who introducing  Islam in Java] to describe how far this mini archipelago from Java, to be exact from Semarang and Jepara.
Stands from 27 islands, this mini archipelago became marine national park and it's like a treasure for those who loves marine life.  Here can be found protected coral reefs [very colourful plateaus and plains in deep and shallow waters], secluded and tranquil white beaches [seems no-one there], pelican and hornbill, seagrass and kinds of sea creatures, from crabs, anchovy, starfish, sharks, stingray, jellyfish, red snappers, etc.
Several additional info from handbook of marine biology:
~ ecosystem type: rainforest plain with seagrass, algae, mangrove and coral reef
~ stands from 27 islands in the chain of archipelago
~ specialities vegetation: Crystocalyx macrophyla
~ type of algae: green, brown and red

~ kind of coral reefs: fringing reef, barrier reef and patch reef. stands from 51 genus, 90 types of hard corals and 242 species of fish.
~ protected items on the sea: Antiphates spp, Tubipora musica, Cassis cornuta, Charonia tritonis, Nautilus pompillius, Turbo marmoratus and 6 types of kima
~ animal on land: Cervus timorensis subspec, Macaca fascicularis karimondjawae, 40 kinds of birds like Ducula aenea, Haliaeetus leucogaster [warning: so rarely found nowadays], Pycnonotus goiavier, Psittacula alexandri, Eretmochelys imbricata, Chelonia mydas and local snake called 'edor'
